You Too Can Look Nice at a Sporting Event Without Wearing Clothes From a Lingerie Company

It’s that time of year, baseball season is approaching! While I’m still watching a few minutes of Avalanche games before I get frustrated by their inability to block shots, and anxiously watching the NHL standings, I’m also looking forward to baseball once again. That is, until it’s the middle of the summer and there aren’t any other sports on television (don’t worry, you’ll know exactly when I’m bored, and it usually coincides with the beginning of NFL training camp).

Baseball, of course, transcends the sport itself: it means American culture, it means hot dogs and beer, and it means warm evenings in late spring when you can fit in six innings of a 7PM game before the sun goes down. It’s synonymous with spring and summer. And because of this, it also tends to be a more “fashionable” sport than say, hockey or football. In baseball, you can get away with a t-shirt and jeans, where the latter involve being near ice, or the possibility of a snowstorm*.

So, all of this being said, it also means that it’s the time of year where Victoria’s Secret comes out with their newest line of Limited Edition MLB clothes. The hoodies and sweatpants look comfortable, but I can’t get behind most of this stuff. I can’t get behind wearing a blinged out racerback tank top to a baseball game. Maybe it works for some people, but it doesn’t work for me. Yankees fans, don’t feel left out, you too can own a racerback tank with your favorite team’s logo. And it has fringe!

Meh.

Meh.

If you’re thinking “hey, that Yankees one looks like something I could make myself with a $5 Modell’s t-shirt and a pair of scissors”, I agree with you. But why do that when you can buy it premade for $32.50 at VS?

Yeah, I know, I’m being sarcastic and petty. I figured out a long time ago that I am not the kind of female fan that Victoria’s Secret is marketing to and should just shut up about it, but what’s the fun in that? And for the record, I go to VS often, I just avoid PINK like the plague. If I’m going to a baseball game, I want to wear a t-shirt, I don’t want someone to think I took a wrong turn on the way to Coachella.

So, I decided to give myself the following challenge: could I walk the walk? I talk about wearing a t-shirt to a game but can I make an outfit around one? If people who gravitate towards PINK baseball clothes do it for a) comfort, b) style and c) because the cut of regular sport t-shirts makes them feel boxy, then could I put together an outfit that satisfied all of those concerns without venturing into Victoria’s Secret?

Comfortable Gameday Outfit

That’s my outfit (and my first attempt at Polyvore, woo!). It’s comfy with a NIKE activewear top and flats. It can easily go from sunny and bright to a bit chillier during those later innings with a denim jacket. If you’re wearing a white fringe racerback, clearly you aren’t worrying about spilling mustard on yourself so white pants is not a problem. And of course, you need a glove (don’t laugh, I do use a children’s baseball mitt when I play catch because it was the best fit for my hand).

No bling, no fringe, just a Mets shirt and some polished accessories. What do you think? To be fair, I am friends with several ladies who rock the bling at games and they love it (and I still love them). Like I said, it just isn’t for me. I’ll stick to VS for undergarments only, thank you very much.

*Okay, okay, my New York is coming through. I am aware that stadiums with retractable roofs exist, and that there are warmer climes where you can wear a t-shirt and jeans even in the winter. How nice for you. I can’t do that though, unless global warming really really takes off.
